‘Ask for FSC’

 

This table (updated from 2004 onwards) is intended as a guide to outlets in Calderdale where you might be able to find at least some sustainably produced timber. This is taken as either Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified or recycled non-contentious timber products.

 

FSC is one of the few timber certifications which is widely recognised as genuinely sustainable: do not accept PEFC certification (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certifications), or assurances that ‘two trees are planted for every one’ or that the timber is ‘Scandinavian’, ‘Swedish’, ‘Finnish’ or any other nationality. Unfortunately, restricting your choices to sustainably produced timber will sometimes restrict your buying choices at present, especially for furniture, and you might end up buying an antique instead of new! However, even if you just ‘Ask for FSC’ this is raising awareness of and demand for sustainably produced timber, and the results of Calderdale’s ongoing Timber Survey shows that more and more outlets are offering FSC timber every year – thanks to people asking for it and preferring it. FSC timber should cost no more than any other timber. It is important that our timber buying choices are strongly affected by sustainability issues.

 

Be cautious of furniture from known hotspots like Indonesia and Malaysia, and accept only FSC certified hardwoods. About 60% of tropical hardwood imports into the UK in 1999 were thought to be illegally logged (Matthew 2001). China is now a major reseller of illegally logged tropical timber, and there are issues with Russian timber. Be careful of new furniture which looks old, or like re-used timber but might not be. We have flagged up outlets which sell timber from places which require caution, usually tropical countries, so ask about the origin of the timber if buying from here. Remember that logging wealth breeds corruption, and assurances of legality mean little without independent certification: FSC is one of the few to trust.
